چکیده

Properly designed validation experiments are necessary to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in simulation algorithms. In this review recent achievements in the measurement techniques used for monitoring macroscopic flow field features are presented. In particular, optical and electro-optical methods, for example thermography, tomography or particle image velocimetry, are reviewed and their application to simple solidification experiments demonstrated. Computer supported experimentation combined with digital data recording and processing allows for the acquisition of a considerable amount of information on flow structures. This data can be used to establish experimental benchmarks for the validation of numerical models employed in solidification problems. Three experimental benchmarks based on water freezing in small containers are proposed to model flow configurations typically associated with crystal growth and mould-filling

Numerical analysis of gas flows in a microchannel using the Cascaded Lattice Boltzmann Method with varying Bosanquet parameter

Abstract. In this paper, a Cascaded Lattice Boltzmann Method with second order slip boundary conditions is developed to study gas flows in a microchannel in the slip and transition flow regimes with a wide range of Knudsen numbers. For the first time the effect of wall confinement is considered on the effective mean free path of the gas molecules using a function with nonconstant Bosanquet para...

Upslope Flows in Atmosphere and Water Tank, Part II: Fluid-Dynamical Smoothness as a Possible Cause for Velocity Similarity Violation

Water-tank models of meso-scale atmospheric processes often show good qualitative agreement of bulk quantities and flow characteristics and good quantitative agreement of turbulence quantities with field observations. However, it was demonstrated in the first part of this two-part communication that the similarity of velocities of thermally driven upslope flows in atmosphere and water tank is v...

External and Internal Incompressible Viscous Flows Computation using Taylor Series Expansion and Least Square based Lattice Boltzmann Method

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has recently become an alternative and promising computational fluid dynamics approach for simulating complex fluid flows. Despite its enormous success in many practical applications, the standard LBM is restricted to the lattice uniformity in the physical space. This is the main drawback of the standard LBM for flow problems with complex geometry. Several app...

An Analytical Approach to the Effect of Viscous Dissipation on Shear-Driven Flow between two parallel plates with Constant Heat Flux Boundary Conditions

An investigation has been made to analyze the effects of viscous dissipation on the heat transfer characteristics for both hydro-dynamically and thermally fully developed, laminar shear driven flow between two infinitely long parallel plates, where the upper plate is moving in an axial direction at a constant speed. On the basis of some routine assumptions made in the literature, a close form a...

Hydrodynamics Analysis of Density Currents

Density Current is formed when a fluid with heavier density than the surrounding fluid flows down an inclined bed. These types of flows are common in nature and can be produced by; salinity, temperature inhomogeneities, or suspended particles of silt and clay. Driven by the density difference between inflow and clear water in reservoirs, density current plunges clear water and moves towards a d...
